Three months of exhibition of the cadavre exquis project at Salão d’A BASE.

Using the collage technique, a technique that “…allows the opening up of conscious, which is very direct…its also a way of looking at what you are consuming all the time” (John Stezaker) the exhibition shows the results of the collage meetings started by the artist between 2024 and 2026.

Bourriaud’s book Relational Aesthetics, published in 1998, provides a conceptual framework for what he identifies as a distinct trend in artistic practice of the 1990s, (…) which takes as its ‘theoretical and practical point of departure the whole of human relations and their social context’.1 As the title of his text indicates, Bourriaud asserts the aesthetic nature of relational works, and hence their value as art, by identifying formal qualities in the interpersonal relationships that they engage. Furthermore, Bourriaud identifies political significance in these relationships as models of interaction that critically reflect upon wider society. Bourriaud argues that by setting up real interactive situations in the gallery, relational works of art do not ‘represent utopias’ but actualise them, creating positive ‘life possibilities’ as ‘concrete spaces’ rather than merely fictional ones. 2

A BASE, in partnership with CASA REDONDA, presents the exhibition CASA COMUM — 100 years of exquisite corpse.

The exhibition takes shape from graphic materials found and collected free of charge by the artist Rita RA in Paris, including street posters, pamphlets, catalogs, and cultural programs. Bringing together visual universes marked by social and spatial extremes, CASA COMUM (Commom Home) establishes a connection between the city center and its periphery, proposing a reflection on the fractures that separate them, as well as on the work, lives, and invisible production that sustain the city.

CASA COMUM unfolds as a large collaborative collage-scenography, built from visual connections between these realities. For the creation of this piece, visual composition workshops based on exquisite corpse exercises were developed, aimed at anyone who wished to participate, regardless of age or condition. Between 2024 and 2025, seven collage workshops were held in Portugal, Spain, and France, with the participation of more than 90 people.

The term “Common Home” was introduced by Mikhail Gorbachev during the drafting of the Earth Charter¹ and later used by Pope Francis in Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home² to describe the profound interconnectedness of all living species on Planet Earth. Both contexts call for collective and conscious action in favor of “a more just, sustainable and peaceful global society in the 21st century”³.

The ROUND HOUSE is a gesture of hope: a circular house that grows through collaboration, a space where difference transforms into strength, a place where we learn that the world is shaped by the hands of all of us, together.

In the year that marks the 100th anniversary of Surrealism and the exquisite corpse, the exhibition recovers this collective practice as a form of composition, play, image construction and joint creation.
